If you feel like you are on the wrong side of history...



If you are starting to feel as if you’re on the wrong side of history, it's ok; just get on the right side.  Join the resistance.

I know many good, smart people who voted for Trump because they wanted change, they didn’t like Hillary, they figured he’d change once he took office, or they always vote republican no matter what.

And I know some of these good, smart people must be looking at this week thinking, “Oh, wow, this isn’t really what I thought it was going to be.  Better keep my head down and my mouth shut.”

If you are feeling like you need to cocoon in, resist.  Keep your eyes up.  Stay alert.  Resist the tactics of lies (i.e. crowd sizes and illegal votes) to confuse you on reality.  Resist the tactics of fear mongering to turn you against others because of religion or ethnicity.  If your moral compass is getting confused, the tactics are working.  Resist.

Good, smart people: if you need a way out, simply say your vote was a misunderstanding.  It's true.  And it's fine.  It doesn’t matter.  This is going to be an all-hands on deck effort.  Joining the resistance isn’t a slam against the republican party.  Over time, you will see more and more republicans join the resistance with you.  In fact, the only way to get your party back is by joining the resistance.  Look at the character of the republicans who are and will be leading the way in resistance--it speaks volumes.

Friends, if you are embarrassed to tout the “successes” of the person you voted for… or if he is confusing you about what’s right or wrong… or if he is making you question reality… or worst of all, if your support of him is making you think and act contrary to your Christian faith… then it probably means you are on the wrong side of history.  There's time to get on the right side.  Join the resistance. 

 The Son of Man’s Arrival will be like that: Two men will be working in the field—one will be taken, one left behind; two women will be grinding at the mill—one will be taken, one left behind. So stay awake, alert. You have no idea what day your Master will show up. But you do know this: You know that if the homeowner had known what time of night the burglar would arrive, he would have been there with his dogs to prevent the break-in. Be vigilant just like that. You have no idea when the Son of Man is going to show up.  Matthew 24:39-44

Was Jesus Polarizing?

Was Jesus a polarizing figure? My church will do a worship series on polarization during Lent.   Wish us luck!   People are already asking me, “Are you really going to ask me to interact with others whose views are so off course that they would become violent?”   That response is incredibly telling of the dynamics at play within our society—that people automatically go to the extreme without seeing the rest.   The goal of this series is to investigate whether the life of Jesus teaches us anything about polarization. PRIDE week communion

It's PRIDE month.  For the last three years, June has been a really strange time in ministry for me.  People often refer friends, relatives, and colleagues to talk through issues around identity and gender diversity.  I get calls from people dissatisfied with their own church's stance who are trying to figure out steps to allyship.  I get calls from parents trying to do the right things.  But the most holy calls I get are from people from the LGBTQIA community, folks looking for hope after church rejection, spiritual trauma, and family rejection.   These folks are brave:  brave to recount the pain, brave to dare to accept themselves, brave to let themselves sense a glimmer of healing grace.  Their stories are sacred, and I feel nothing but gratitude that I'm let into this sacredness.   Recently I was asked by a group to provide a two-minute speech about the power of story-telling during a time of holy conferencing (the nice version of debate) at the gathering of Minnesota U
